Personality:
Strengths/Weaknesses: To start with, when he was about 10 years old (the series states he was 12 near the end, but given the history of Kaito and Haruto shown earlier in the series, it really just seems like the writers forgot what they were doing because certain events would be impossible if that were the case), Kaito built a robot all by himself, Orbital 7, meant to be a sort of 'nanny' to an infant Haruto. Though, once he went through his training to become a Numbers Hunter, he added several different transformation capabilities, such as a glider, a jetpack (capable of flying at speeds of up to 230km/h), a motorcycle, and a spacesuit, as well as the ability to slow down time (approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes can be spent within the vaccuum while simply one second passes outside of it), so it's clear that he's intelligent. He's also aided in building an interdimensional portal, all of which gives the impression that he's well-versed in astrophysics.
When he was about 13 or 14, through dueling, he gained the 'ability' to keep himself alive through just his will to survive. Though he's experienced severe health issues throughout the series, it's assumed that this strong will has kept him alive, and his 'burning blood' has even expelled hallucinatory poison from his system and helped him recover in a matter of seconds. It really is less of some super special power and more just his will alone.
His biggest strength and weakness however, is his brother Haruto. He would do anything for the sake of his brother, no matter what the cost, and it's both a blessing and a curse. He'll fight with everything he has to keep Haruto safe, but he'll also take lives if he absolutely has no other choice.

Immediately, he had sensed that something was off, if one were to ignore the annoying music playing in the background, and with a quick assessing look around, he realized he was right. This wasn't his bed or his room. Orbital 7, his companion, wasn't waiting for him nearby. The entire atmosphere of the area was similar to Heartland Tower though, full of conniving, disgusting people just waiting to manipulate and harm others. He wasn't even sure how he could tell, but while the room itself was strange to him, it just seemed as if it fit in perfectly at the tower. But that place had been his home for years now. He knew of every single room in all of the dozens of floors it had, and this was not one of them.
Immediately, he checked his pockets of his jacket for his D-Gazer and let out a grunt of frustration when he found it wasn't there. In the midst of that was when he'd noticed the note on the pillow, and he snatched it up after failing to find what he'd been looking for, reading it over at least three times to make sure he could glean everything he could from it - not that there was even much to begin with. A few unhelpful sentences that didn't explain a damn thing about where he was?
Team Rocket... that didn't sound familiar in the least, and as he leaned over, he grabbed the bag at his feet and pulled it open, letting the uniform spill out. That sure as hell wasn't familiar either, and neither was that ball or the device on the desk. Kaito's mind started to race as he kept getting pieces to the puzzle but no closer to the answer, almost immediately, he launched himself off of the bed and grabbed the device in case it could be used for communication, wasting no time in calling out for Haruto. He would search every damn corner for Haruto if he had to, it wouldn't matter how long it would take, so long as he found him in the end. And if anyone had taken him or hurt him-- he wasn't sure if all of Haruto's powers were still in tact or not, but if he just maybe looked for large holes in the walls, he could follow the trail and find the only person that meant anything to him.

Personality:
The kind of man that Kaito comes off as upon first appearance is not entirely defining of who he is, but that's probably easy to say of anyone.
To begin with, we see an almost cruel person, someone that 'hunts' for the thrill of it, and who may or may not talk like he's your typical shounen villain with a religious twist. He talks of repentance, of being the light that illuminates the darkness stagnating in the hearts of humanity, while throwing out things like 'let the hunt begin' and 'allow me to release you from your suffering'. He also comes off as cold towards his robot companion, Orbital 7, whom he uses to get around the giant city that is Heartland, as well as anyone that tries to interfere with his personal business, leading him to come off as, put simply, an asshole.
Known as the 'Numbers Hunter', Kaito tends to hunt down people that he suspects have a Numbers card, a card that speaks to the one holding it and convinces them to give into its power so that person can focus on their deepest desires, turning (mostly) innocent people into criminals and killers - to give a little context on why he speaks the way that he does to people. And when he duels them and extracts the Numbers from their soul, he also... takes their soul with it and typically doesn't bother to put it back. But there's much more to him than just 'hey look at me I'm a flashy jerk that steals peoples' souls'.
Cut to later in his debut episode when he goes back to Heartland Tower where he lives - firstly, there's his meeting with Mr. Heartland who keeps pushing and pushing (with a creepy smile) that Kaito needs to keep doing this if he wants to see his little brother, Haruto, healthy again, no matter how much he feels guilty for having to take the souls of people in the first place. And a few minutes later, Kaito goes to see his brother and looks terrified, then devastated when Haruto asks why people are laughing, that screams are the only thing that comfort him. When Haruto asks if he's strange, Kaito kneels down to hug him and tells him that he's only having a bad dream, that Haruto doesn't need to worry because he'll be the one to awaken him from it.
After this, it's no surprise that Haruto is Kaito's complete driving force, that everything he does and has ever done has been for the sake of his little brother, no matter how much it rubs his morality the wrong way or how much it hurts him physically to do so. If Kaito's angry, if he sees Haruto in pain and can do nothing about it, he acts without caution, even going as far as hurting potential allies in his rage. He's stopped a duel when he was about to win just because Haruto was in danger, and he constantly exhausts himself, pushing himself to his absolute limits for the sake of making sure that he does everything he needs to so that Haruto isn't sick anymore. Haruto is his number one priority, no matter what, and though he's had a moment or two where he's given up, where he's felt as if he just can't fight anymore, all it takes are a few well-said words to get him back up and fighting with twice the ferocity as before.
He's warm, loving and comforting towards his brother, abrasive yet mildly submissive towards Mr. Heartland, and to his prey or anyone that gets in his way, he's a coldblooded hunter, whistling an eerie tune to strike fear into their hearts before he takes their soul in a duel (however, he prefers to manipulate the fear already there thanks to his appearance and entrances than give them that fear through threats).
But let's get a little deeper than that.
When dealing with other people, at least, once he's on somewhat friendly terms with them, he can be incredibly blunt and linefacey, and he's also incredibly genre savvy at some points, being intelligent enough (considering most of the ZEXAL cast are 13-14 years old and he's, well, 18) to identify when something is a trap and being purposely left out of specific episodes much later in the series so he couldn't put the pieces together of a major plot point too soon. Either way, smiles are rare for Kaito unless he's around Haruto, and at this particular point of the series that I'm taking him from, Haruto is the only exception.
He tends to be incredibly bitter towards certain people - not just Mr. Heartland as mentioned before, but his father, Dr. Faker, for being the one to put Haruto in the state that he's in, as well as his ex-mentor and only friend at the time Christopher Arclight for leaving him (lying on the cold hard ground) without any explanation as to why. Though towards his 'friends', Droite and Gauche, he still comes off as cold, but he's more willing to actually listen to them when they talk.
Kaito's entirely capable of being more friendly, but from this particular canon point, he still has trouble believing in others and letting himself actually... let others help him. He does so begrudgingly a few times, but it's never an easy thing for him to peek around the walls he's built just to let someone in a little more. He considers himself too hurt by others to trust much of anyone else, preferring to do things alone so long as Haruto is the reason why.
All in all, Kaito is capable of being a genuinely kind person, it simply takes someone worming their way into his heart one way or another to get him to understand that it's okay to place trust in others again, even if it is a little selective. He has a heart of gold encased in layers of ice, and if someone with their typical protagonist nonsense can open him up, he can become a good friend who will step in and help others even if he doesn't necessarily need to. (Though he is capable of saving lives for the sake of saving lives, no matter what. He saves a blimp from crashing and destroying buildings, saving hundreds of innocent lives in the process, and though he brushes it off as not wanting to cause chaos in the city during a tournament, it really has more to do with saving people to make up for the lives of the people he's hunted and destroyed at that point.)
Until then however, Kaito will be... simply put, an asshole.
